The Cavaliers have been my favorite team for a long time, ever since the days of Daugherty and Price. The sad part about being a fan of this team is that, essentially, we have been the laughingstock of the league for the franchise's entire existence, save a few seasons here
and there.
During the Daugherty/Price era we had a great team, one
that may have been able to win the title a few times, except for the fact that we could never get by Michael Jordan in the playoffs. I still remember Jordan hitting a jumper over an outstretched Craig Ehlo like it happened yesterday.
For much of the 90s I abandoned my Cavs, and instead chose to follow Michael Jordan, after all, if you cant beat 'em, join 'em. After the strike ended, and I found myself having more free time I got back into basketball. Since Jordan had retired, I started to follow the Cavs
again.
Sadly for the next several years we continued to suck. Our front office had a string of blunders on draft day, taking such future hall-of-shamers like Trajan Langdon, DaSagna Diop, and DeJuan Wagner.
And then there were numerous trades that brought us guys like Darius Miles, and other guys with questionable attitudes. I hated how poorly our team was constructed for a long time. But there was an upside to all the futility, the ability to draft Lebron James.
Unlike previous years when we were among the worst teams in the league(early 80s), we actually had our pick and after a successful lottery draw, we were able to get Lebron. What I love about being a Cavaliers fan is that we now have one of the greatest players in the world on our team, and the future that will happen because of him.
With a talent like Lebron, the Cavaliers are in a great position to be able to win a title soon. And that is why it is great to be a Cavs fan again. |
